Science is a field of discovery that accompanies humans to great knowledge about the reality we live in. Humans have been utilizing this tool to achieve extraordinary heights while scaling the mountains of learning and comprehension. It is a powerful key that unlocks many doors to assist mankind in knowing and doing more everyday.
Today, science includes a multitude of sub-fields of study through which one approaches the different doors that have been opened or are still waiting to be opened. Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Anthropology, to name some of the major courses, are all roads which lead to knowledge and a greater understanding of reality. The information that has been collected and recorded by those working in these fields is enough to fill libraries and would take more than a single lifetime for one person to read everything.
While it is an unprovable claim to state that only science can validate what is true and what is false or what is reality and what is not, we can still understand that Science has been a great help in the human understanding of the world around us. However, some still refuse to accept the truths found through the scientific processes. Although there have been countless first hand testimonies, tested miracles, and a Tradition that has withstood the test of time, all of which affirm the reality of God’s existence, some people continue to deny this truth. However, we can see the testimonies of Christians, reported miracles, and the Tradition of the Church all as scientific and historical evidence of a God with Whom it is possible for one to have a relationship with.
An important part of the quest to observe and attain knowledge within the realm of Science is the Scientific method, the process in which scientists test hypothesis to see if they are true or false. In the beginning of this method, after gathering much research on a subject, a question is formulated and a hypothesis is presented to answer it. The hypothesis is tested with a designed experiment and the results are recorded. Through these steps, the hypothesis is eventually proven or disproven.
Scientists have come to understand that to apply this method only once is not enough for a hypothesis to be proven accurate. Scientists themselves cycle through the steps a number of times before they move forward with staking their claim. Furthermore, they record their research and results and how they achieved them for others to imitate and achieve the same results. It is a true victory when a hypothesis is tested and found to be true enough times to become a theory as the scientist’s claim must survive the skepticism of a vast array of experts in the chosen field.
I remember growing up and hearing about dinosaurs, the planets, mitochondria, atoms, and other amazing things in my science classes. Each time I went along with what the teacher was telling me without more proof than what I read in the textbook. Plus, what I was learning made sense to me.
This is essentially how it works. Scientists discover great things and people accept it. And I am not saying this is entirely bad. I enjoyed the photos of the moon shared by the Artemis astronauts, I like seeing dinosaur bones at the museum, and the periodic table is fascinating. I am simply saying that when enough experts in a field perform an experiment and find the results that prove their hypothesis, even though to find the same results ourselves might prove to be difficult, we are able to take their word for it, or work to understand their findings ourselves.
Unfortunately, the Atheistic claim that there is no God defies this important process of Science. For one to assert that God does not exist, one must reject the personal testaments of a large amount of people, many of whom would be considered experts in the field, who confidently proclaim that God is real. Many even gave their lives for this claim. Moreover, these people have also recorded their findings and methods for others to see and imitate. See the Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisiuex entitled The Story of a Soul, the numerous works of St, John of the Cross, St. Louis de Montfort, St. Augustine, St. Teresa of Avila, and many more.
Furthermore, great scientists such as Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and Gregor Mendel believed in God’s existence and referred to Him as the Source of the beautiful systems that they studied. Einstein himself pointed to God’s work in Creation when he stated, “We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangements of the books, but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God” (G. S. Viereck, Glimpses of the Great (Macauley, New York, 1930), quoted by D. Brian, Einstein: A Life , p. 186). While Eienstein and the other scientists are not theologians, so not experts in the field of God, it still seems baffling to me that those who emphasize the role of science in disproving God would ignore the words of such men.
The accounts of many more souls throughout time corroborate the same thoughts. Yes, many simple minded folk, but is it not amazing that a poor uneducated French girl, St. Bernadette Soubirouse, would be able to tell her parish priest that the woman who appeared to her greeted her by declaring “I am the Immaculate Conception”, a 4 year old Dogma that, in 1958, would most likely not be known by St. Bernedette’s parents, let alone simple Bernadette. Additionally, we have great minds like St. Thomas Aquinas, who was able to dictate to as many as four secretaries at a time on different subjects and produced the great Philosophical work, the Summa Theologae. There is also St. Hildegard of Bingen, a true Renaissance woman, who was able to draw, write music, produce many scientific and medicinal writings, becoming well known for her ability to heal others, as well as present such insightful and inspiring Theological works that she has been named a Doctor of the Catholic Church. Additionally, we can credit the Catholic Church with the formation and development of the University system that we use today and of course it was monks who invented champagne.
On top of the vast number of personal testimonies, there have been numerous miracles throughout time that have truly been put to the test, some multiple times, without scientists finding a natural cause. For example we have the shroud of Turin, the cloak that was wrapped around the Body of Jesus during His Resurrection and contains the miraculous image of His Body from the flash of what equals about 34 thousand billion watts. Also, the tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a cloak decorated with an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by the Blessed Virgin Mary herself in 1531, that is still on display in Mexico City. The tilma has survived acid spilling over it without damage to the tilma or image and a bomb detonating several feet from the tilma causing no damage to it.
The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano is a perplexing case to science, in which a consecrated host turned into heart tissue in the 8th century A.D. and still exists today. What is equally fascinating is that the Blood type from this last miracle matches that found on the Shroud of Turin. Finally, there are many more miracles, including numerous ones surrounding the lives of the saints who have lived on this planet. The first three examples still exist today and still hold up to the science of today without any replication being possible, even with modern technology.
While these miracles are unable to be replicated, they have all been scientifically tested and the findings all point to God’s true existence. Of course, it is possible to ignore these findings, just as it would be possible to ignore the finding that a pace-maker can actually keep someone’s heart beating at a constant rate. However, in both cases, you will miss out on a great life-saving truth.
There is also the historical proof of a 2,000 year old Tradition of Faith built on a much older Tradition of the Jewish belief in God. We can look to the writings of the Scriptures and the Church Fathers who wrote from the beginning of Christ’s Church to know that this Tradition has existed this long. Furthermore, throughout these centuries only more and more evidence has been given affirming this Tradition and the truth of God’s existence. No other existing institution or group has an equal amount of evidence to back itself up.
We can see then that the testimonies, tested miracles, and Tradition of Faith all point to the scientific Truth of God’s existence. To say otherwise is simply anti-science. Therefore, atheism is unscientific.
